Intarsia, the art of coloring with wood.

Growing up, long before I became a woodworker, I always thought wood was brown. Maybe reddish if I was lucky enough to spot some eastern red cedar. And when I heard the word "cherry," my young mind jumped straight to elegance and expense — something out of reach.

What I've learned since then has completely changed how I see wood. Every species carries its own color, its own character. And after nearly two decades at the saw, I'm still discovering more.

From the white of Holly, to the black of Ebony, there is a Rainbow of Wood colors.

  • Maple — creamy white

  • Yellowheart — golden yellow

  • Padauk — vivid orange-red

  • Purpleheart — deep violet

  • Lignum Vitae — olive green

  • Eastern Red Cedar — reddish pink

  • Peruvian Walnut — near black/deep brown
